Neem Flowers Powder

Vepa Puvvu Podi.

Dried neem flowers / enda pettina vepa puvvu is used in making this simple yet tasty powder. Dried neem flowers are fried in ghee and ground into powder along with other spices. Neem flowers powder is served with steamed rice and dollop of ghee.
Makes: around quarter cup of Neem Flowers Powder.


Dried Neem Flowers 1/4 Cup
Chana Dal 1/4 tsp
Urad Dal 1/4 tsp
Mustard Seeds 1/4 tsp
Cumin Seeds 1/4 tsp
Dried Red Chiles 2 – 3
Tamarind 1/2 inch Piece
Ghee 1/2 tsp

Method of preparation:

Heat quarter tsp of ghee in a small pan, add dried neem flowers and fry till aromatic or until they turn golden brown in color.
Remove the fried neem flowers from the pan, add remaining ghee.
Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, urad dal, chana dal and dried red chiles to the pan.
When mustard seeds start spluttering, add tamarind and remove from heat.
Cool all the ingredients to room temperature.
First grind all the spices into fine powder.
Finally add the fried neem flowers and give it a quick pulse.
Store neem flowers powder in a tight jar and it stays fresh for a week or two.
Notes: Make sure not to burn any of the ingredients.

Suggestions: For dried neem flowers, dry the fresh neem flowers under direct sunlight for a whole day.
Variations: You can also make quick and simple neem flowers rice with the dried neem flowers.
