Tamarind Poha

Pulusu Lo Atukulu.

Poha or flattened rice is soaked in water for sometime until it absorbs some of the water. Oil is tempered with couple of dals and spices along with green chillies and tamarind extract is cooked in the oil. Finally soaked poha is mixed with the tamarind mixture. The tamarind flavored poha is generally eaten with scoops of plain yogurt.
Makes: 2 Servings of Tamarind Poha


Thick Poha 1 1/2 Cups
Green chillies 2
Tamarind 1 1/2 inch sized ball
Red Chilli Powder 1/4 tsp
Turmeric powder a big pinch
Salt to taste


Chana dal 1 tsp
Urad Dal 1/4 tsp
Cumin Seeds 1/4 tsp
Mustard Seeds 1/4 tsp
Curry Leaves 10
Broken Red Chiles 3
Hing a big pinch
Oil 1 tbsp

Method of preparation:

Wash poha under water thoroughly and soak it in a cup of water for 2 – 3 minutes.
Strain the soaked poha and keep aside for it to puff up with all the soaked water.
Soak tamarind in half cup of water for 15 minutes and extract all the pulp.
Wash, remove stems and slice green chillies into halves.

Heat oil in a pan, add peanuts and when they are about to turn brown add all other talimpu ingredients in order.
When chana dal changes color, add green chillies, tamarind pulp, red chilli powder, turmeric powder and salt.
Leave the tamarind mixture to bubble for around 10 minutes or until the oil separates from the mixture.
Then stir in soaked poha and mix carefully.
Adjust any seasonings required and remove from heat.
Serve tamarind poha with plain yogurt as a snack or breakfast.
Notes:Make sure poha is not oversoaked.

Suggestions: If poha is not soaked well and becomes dry, sprinkle a tbsp or two of water over the poha until its tempered.
Variations: You can also add peanuts to the tempering along with minced ginger. Poha in Spicy Yogurt.
