Dondakaya Korma

Tindora or tondli is one of those fruits which can be made into a korma. Korma always contains a ground spice paste and here coconut and poppy seeds are ground into a paste along with green chillies and some cashews. The paste is cooked along with tindora along with onion and other spices in tempered oil.
Makes: around 4 Servings of Tindora Kurma

Ingredients:

Tindora around 20
Onion 1 medium
Tomato 1 small
Ginger Garlic Paste 1 tsp
Garam Masala 1/2 tsp
Red Chilli Powder 1/4 tsp
Turmeric Powder a pinch
Cilantro few sprigs
Salt to taste

Masala:

Grated Coconut 2 tbsps
Poppy Seeds 1 tbsp
Green Chillies 2
Raw Cashews 5

Talimpu:

Urad Dal 1/4 tsp
Cumin Seeds 1/4 tsp
Mustard Seeds 1/4 tsp
Curry Leaves 6
Oil 1 tsp

Method of preparation:

Wash, remove ends and vertically slice the tindora.
Remove stems, wash and roughly chop the green chiles.
Peel and finely chop the onion.
Wash and finely chop tomato.
Wash and roughly chop cilantro.
Break raw cashews into small pieces to aid in grinding.

First grind poppy seeds into powder then continue adding green chillies, coconut and cashews.
Grind everything into fine paste adding enough water.

Heat oil in a pan, add all talimpu ingredients in order.
When urad dal changes color, add chopped onion and salt.
Once onion turns translucent, add ginger garlic paste.
Fry for few seconds or until the raw smell of ginger garlic paste disappears.
Stir in tindora slices and turmeric powder.
Sprinkle few tbsps of water and cook covered till tindora turns little soft.
Then add ground coconut poppy seeds paste, chopped tomato and quarter cup of water to make it into a gravy.
Boil on medium flame till tindora is completely cooked and soft.
Stir in garam masala, red chile powder and cilantro.
Let it bubble for a minute or until oil oozes out.
Garnish with cilantro and serve tindora kurma with chapati or with steamed plain rice.
Notes:Make sure tindora is cooked well before removing from heat.

Suggestions: If tindora feels raw, put the korma back on stove and cook till tindora is soft but not mushy.

    once we went indian resturant where we tried a fried veg i think it was tindora, it was very tasty so i shall try this quorma also.
