Plantain with Green Chana

Aratikaya Senagala Kura.

Plantain or raw banana is paired with freshly shelled green chana in this curry. Plantain is boiled in water till soft. Green chana is also boiled in water or microwaved for few minutes. Both of them once cooked are added to the tempered oil having grated ginger and chopped green chiles.
Makes: 3 Servings


Plantain 2 medium
Green Chana 1/2 Cup
Ginger 2 inch Piece
Green Chiles 2 – 3
Salt to taste


Urad Dal 1/4 tsp
Cumin Seeds 1/4 tsp
Mustard Seeds 1/4 tsp
Curry Leaves 10
Asafoetida a pinch
Oil 1 tsp

Method of preparation:

Remove ends, remove thick skin and chop plantain into small pieces into a bowl filled with water.
Peel and grate or mince the ginger.
Remove stems, wash and chop the green chiles.
Shell the fresh green chana.

Bring to boil few cups of water in a sauce pot, add chopped plantain.
Halway through the boiling process, add the raw green chana.
Boil till plantain is completely cooked without getting mushy.
Strain the cooked plantain along with green chana.

Heat oil in a pan, add all talimpu ingredients in order.
When urad dal changes color, add ginger and green chiles.
After few seconds, add cooked plaintain, green chana and salt.
Stir fry for a minute or two and remove from heat.
Serve plantain with green chana over plain steamed rice and dollop of ghee.
Notes: Make sure plantain is cooked well.

Suggestions: If plantain or the green chana feels raw, put the curry back on stove, sprinkle tbsp of water and cook covered on low flame till done.
Variations: Use black chickpea or white garbanzo beans if fresh green chickpeas are not available. Cook the beans before adding to the curry. Also check Plantain Raita.
