Green Papaya with Mustard Powder

Green Papaya 1/2 of medium one
Green Chiles 2
Mustard Seeds 2 tsps
Whole Dried Red Chile 1
Tamarind 1 – 1 1/2 inch sized ball
Turmeric Powder a big pinch
Salt to taste


Urad Dal 1 tsp
Cumin Seeds 1/2 tsp
Mustard Seeds 1/4 tsp
Curry Leaves 10
Broken Dried Red Chiles 4
Oil 2 tsps

Method of preparation:

Wash, peel, remove ends, halve, remove seeds and grate half of the green papaya on thicker side of grater.
Remove stems, wash and slice the green chiles.
Soak tamarind in water for few minutes and extract the juice.
Grind mustard seeds and red chile into fine powder with sufficient salt.

Heat oil in a pan, add all talimpu ingredients in order.
When mustard seeds start spluttering, add green chiles, grated green papaya and turmeric powder.
Add tamarind juice and cook covered on low flame till grated papaya is soft.
Then add mustard seeds red chile powder and stir. Adjust the seasonings and remove from heat.
Serve green papaya curry with steamed rice or roti.

Notes: Choose a very firm green papaya for this recipe.
