Ingredients:

Toor dal 1 1/2 cups
Vakkaya 1 cup
Green chillies 6 – 8
Turmeric Powder a big pinch
Salt to taste

Talimpu:

Urad Dal 1 tsp
Mustard seeds 1 tsp
Cumin seeds 1 tsp
Broken Red Chiles 4
Asafoetida a pinch
Curry leaves 4
Oil 1 tbsp

Method of preparation:

Wash toor dal thoroughly and cook in 2 cups of water for 2-3whistles in a pressure cooker.

Wash and cut the vakkaya into halves.
Deseed and soak the vakkaya in water to avoid blackening.
Remove stems and slit green chiles.

Heat oil in a pan, add urad dal, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves and green chillies.
When seeds start to jump, add halved vakkaya and a cup of water.
Bring to boil and cook for 2 minutes or until the bringle turns soft.
Then add cooked toor dal, turmeric powder and salt.
Add water if required and boil for 2-4 minutes on medium flame.
Serve hot with rice or roti.

Notes: Make sure vakkaya is soft and cooked before adding dal.
