Wood Apple Raita

Velagapandu Perugu Pachadi

Ingredients:

Wood Apple / Velagapandu 1
Yogurt 1 cup
Green Chiles 1 – 2
Salt to taste

Talimpu:

Urad Dal 1/2 tsp
Cumin Seeds 1/2 tsp
Mustard Seeds 1/2 tsp
Broken Red Chiles 2
Curry Leaves 6 – 8
Oil 1 tsp

Method of preparation:

Remove stems, wash and roughly chop green chiles.
Using a heavy object, break wood apple into two pieces.
Discard hard outer shell and take the inner flesh into a bowl.

Using mortar and pestle, mash raw flesh of wood apple, green chiles and salt thoroughly.
Alternatively, use a grind to briefly grind those ingredients.

In a bowl, whisk yogurt and ground wood apple flesh together thoroughly.

Heat oil in a pan, add all talimpu ingredients in order.
When urad dal changes color, remove from heat and add to above yogurt bowl.
Mix thoroughly and serve.

Notes: Make sure to mash wood apple well before mixing in yogurt.
